The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.
All Member States are invited to participate in celebrating 2011 as the International Year of Forests and organize, at the local and national levels, various events and activities related to the Year, focusing on raising awareness at all levels to strengthen the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for the benefit of current and future generations.
Forest habitats in Učka Nature Park are the most numerous, covering more than 70% of the total park area, being home to many endangered and protected plant and animal species. The most strikingly distinctive feature of Učka and Ćićarija from the naturalist perspective is the occurrence of beech forest in peak areas above 800 m. These forests are not continuously connected to other beech forests in the littoral range of the Dinaric mountains, but tower like isolated islands above the sub-Mediterranean area.
Throughout 2011, the Učka Nature Park Public Institution, with its educational activities and programmes, will traditionally celebrate important dates related to nature and environment protection, including the International Biodiversity Day (22nd May), to raise awareness about nature and the environment, and to encourage ways of protecting and respecting nature, as well as to popularize the protected area.
We sincerely hope that celebrating 2011 as the International Year of Forests will raise public awareness about the importance of forest conservation!
