So it comes as no suprise that there are numerous hiking trails in and around U\u010dka and \u0106i\u0107arija. The first recorded ascent of U\u010dka&#8217;s peak was made in 1722 by Zanichelli, a botanist from Venice. Over the next 150 years, numerous botanists and geologists from various countries visited U\u010dka to pursue their interest in the mountain&#8217;s rich vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>The first Croatian botanist to visit the slopes of U\u010dka was Ljudevit Rossi in 1872.<\/p>\n<p>The Saxon king Friedrich August II, who was also a passionate botanist, climbed the peak of U\u010dka on the 10th of May 1838 in an expedition together with the Croatian\u00a0<em>Ban<\/em>Josip Jela\u010di\u0107. A stone plaque whose inscription is in Latin has been erected in Lovran to commemorate this event.<\/p>\n<p>These were the years when U\u010dka was growing increasingly popular due to its closeness of Opatija, a popular resort for European aristocracy. As a result, many aristocrats of that time visited U\u010dka to admire its beauty. With the development of tourism along the coast, progress gradually reached the slopes of U\u010dka too. The local tourism office would advise visitors to take a cruise on Kvarner Bay or a\u00a0<em>&#8220;highly rewarding mountain tour&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0to U\u010dka&#8217;s peak.<\/p>\n<p>This is how U\u010dka, previously of interest only to scientists, geologists or botanists, became popular among hikers and day-trippers and the tourists who were spending their holidays in Opatija.<\/p>\n<p>The Poklon pass and the whole of Mount U\u010dka became a favourite destination of tourists from the whole Opatija Riviera. The Poklon Mountain Hut provided comfortable shelter and was a starting point for climbing the peak, where one could enjoy a magnificent sunrise, the most spectacular moment of any ascent to the peak of U\u010dka.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to mention that in\u00a0<strong>1852<\/strong>, Avelin \u0106epuli\u0107 from Rijeka published an article entitled\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Dawn at U\u010dka&#8221;<\/strong>in the Neven magazine. This article, describing the ascent of some mountaineers from Rijeka to the peak of U\u010dka, represents the first account of a hiking trip in Croatian literature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some important years in the history of hiking on U\u010dka:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1874\u00a0<\/strong>Founding of the Croatian Mountaineering Society, which made Croatians the ninth nation in the world to have their own alpine club, even before some &#8220;alpine&#8221; peoples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1885<\/strong>\u00a0The Viennese architect Ferdinand Brodbeck, a member of the\u00a0<em>Oesterreichischer Touristen Club<\/em>\u00a0(OTC), founds the\u00a0<em>Club Alpino Fiumano<\/em>\u00a0(CAF). In the same year, the OTC opens a new route to Mount U\u010dka (Opatija \u2013 Veprinac \u2013 U\u010dka).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1887<\/strong>\u00a0150 day-trippers from Vienna climb Mount U\u010dka. In the same year, the first mountaineering facility on U\u010dka is opened on the Poklon pass \u2013 the\u00a0<em>Kronprinzessin Stephanie\u00a0<\/em>mountain hut.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1888<\/strong>\u00a0Founding of the\u00a0<em>Littoral Alpine Club<\/em>. Two renowned personalities of that period, Frano Supilo and Vladimir Nazor, used to visit U\u010dka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1911<\/strong>\u00a0Construction of the stone tower at Vojak peak, on the initiative of the\u00a0<em>Oesterreichischer Touristen Club.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1913<\/strong>\u00a0Guido Depoli (president of the CAF) publishes the hiker&#8217;s guidebook &#8220;<em>Guida di Fiume e dei nostri monti<\/em>&#8220;, in which he describes climbing Mount U\u010dka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1912<\/strong>\u00a0The CAF takes possession of the Poklon mountain hut, renaming it\u00a0<em>&#8220;Rifugio Duchessa d&#8217;Aosta&#8221;<\/em>. After World War Two and the establishment of further alpine clubs in Rijeka and Opatija, hikers begin to regularly climb Mount U\u010dka.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965<\/strong>\u00a0Opening of the new Poklon mountain lodge.<\/p>\n<p>A great number of hiking trails located on U\u010dka and \u0106i\u0107arija are just waiting for you to discover and research them, whether you start your adventure from the Kvarner coast, from the mountain pass Poklon or from the Istrian side of the mountains.
